Sermon: “When the Enemy Gathers, God Still Reigns”
Text: Psalm 83
Psalm 83 is the last psalm attributed to Asaph. It is a cry from a man who sees God’s people surrounded by enemies. Nations have joined together with one purpose—to destroy Israel and remove the name of God’s people from the earth. Humanly speaking, the situation appears hopeless. Yet instead of giving in to fear, Asaph turns to God.
The lesson is timeless. God’s people have always faced opposition. The enemy may change his methods, but his purpose remains the same: to discourage God’s people, silence their witness, and weaken their faith. But Psalm 83 reminds us that our greatest refuge is not in ourselves but in the Lord.
The psalm begins with an urgent prayer:
“Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.”
It almost sounds as if God is silent. Have you ever prayed and wondered why Heaven seemed quiet? There are times when we cannot understand God’s timing. Yet silence does not mean absence. God had not abandoned Israel, and He has not abandoned His children today. Faith trusts God even when His voice seems quiet.
Asaph then describes how the enemies of Israel have united together. They say,
“Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation.”
Their attack is not merely against Israel—it is against God’s purposes. Throughout Scripture, Satan has tried to destroy the people through whom God would bring His promises. Yet every plan against God ultimately fails because God’s purposes cannot be defeated.
When Asaph looks at the present danger, he remembers the past victories. He recalls how God defeated Midian, Sisera, Jabin, and other enemies. Faith grows stronger when it remembers what God has already done. The same God who delivered yesterday is able to deliver today.
As believers, we also need to remember God’s faithfulness. Think back over your own life. There were times when you thought you would never get through the trial, yet God carried you. There were prayers He answered, doors He opened, burdens He lifted, and strength He gave when you had none. The God who helped you then has not changed.
The closing verses reveal something beautiful. Although Asaph asks God to judge the nations, his deepest desire is not simply their destruction. He prays,
“That they may seek thy name, O LORD.”
Even in judgment, there is a desire that people would come to know the true God. God’s justice and God’s mercy are never in conflict. His ultimate purpose is that people would recognize Him as the Lord over all the earth.
The final verse declares,
“That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.”
That is the great message of Psalm 83. Kings may rise, nations may unite, and enemies may threaten, but God is still on His throne. He alone is the Most High.
Today, perhaps your enemies are not armies but fear, sickness, loneliness, temptation, disappointment, or uncertainty. Whatever stands against you, remember this: the Lord has not changed. He is still sovereign. He still hears prayer. He still delivers His people. He still works all things according to His perfect will.
So when the enemy gathers, do not panic—pray. When the future seems uncertain, remember God’s faithfulness. When fear whispers that all is lost, lift your eyes to Heaven and remember that the Lord reigns.
The God of Psalm 83 is the same God who sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to defeat our greatest enemies—sin, death, and Satan—through His death and resurrection. Because Christ has won the victory, those who trust in Him can face every battle with confidence.
May we leave today with this assurance: our enemies may gather, but our God still reigns forever. Amen.
